INTIMATE DISCOMFORT - SYMPTOMS, TRIGGERS & TREATMENTS
Is that awkward itch and intimate discomfort getting you down? This can be an embarrassing topic to discuss, and in extreme cases can really affect quality of life. We’re here to help you take control of your intimate health, and give your bits the care they deserve. Not sure what’s at the root of your intimate issue? Here are a few common causes of intimate discomfort that could be affecting you…
MENOPAUSE - As we age and our hormone levels change, so does our body and intimate areas. Oestrogen levels drop as we reach menopause, which causes the vaginal tissues to thin, and dryness down below as moisture levels reduce. As sensitivity increases and natural lubrication decreases, it is common for women to experience itching, discomfort and burning. Treatment options include HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) or Vaginal Oestrogen Creams, Pessaries and Tablets. Your GP can discuss your options with you and find the best course of treatment.
THRUSH - 3 out of 4 women are likely to experience thrush at least once within their life, and even men can experience it too. So, you’re not alone! Thrush is caused by a fungus called candida, that is naturally-occurring on the body and usually harmless, and is characterised by itching, stinging, soreness and a thick white discharge. Candida prefers to grow in warm, moist conditions and develops if the balance of bacteria in the skin changes. Other factors can increase your risk too, like pregnancy, a weakened immune system, diabetes and skin irritation. Antifungal medications can help restore the balance of natural fungus and bacteria down below. Regular maintenance can also help keep thrush at bay - using intimate washes and sprays daily can help keep those nasties at bay.
ALLERGIES & SENSITIVITY - The skin in our intimate area is thinner than the rest of our body, so you may find that you have an increased sensitivity to the colourants, perfumes or chemicals in your body products. Condoms may irritate your skin if you have a sensitivity to latex, and some ingredients in lubricants can also cause irritation. It is important to keep track of what you’re using on your skin, even down to sanitary products - these can include scents and adhesives that can aggravate skin. Severe reactions can lead to intimate dermatitis (or eczema) and cause increased discomfort as sores and cracks form in the intimate skin. Identify what’s triggering that awkward itch and make smart swaps to natural alternatives.
BACTERIAL VAGINOSIS - Caused by a change in the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina, Bacterial Vaginosis can cause bad odour, thin discharge, itching and stinging during urination. Maintaining the balance of your vaginal flora means harmony down below, as the good bacteria will outweigh the bad. Using pH balancing personal care products with prebiotic ingredients can help to boost the microbiome layer in the skin, helping to avoid any pesky intimate issues.
SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED INFECTIONS - This is an embarrassing subject for most but STIs can be very common amongst both genders, and can cause unwanted itching and irritation in the intimate area. If you’re unsure of your symptoms, your GP can help you identify the cause of your issues and recommend the best course of treatment. Using anti-itch intimate care products can help you manage your symptoms while your medication gets to work at targeting the causes.
