The Natural Ingredients That Could Be Sabotaging Your Skin

As a skincare brand that focuses on using natural ingredients and extracts to boost your skin's health, it's important for us to chat about the natural DIY ingredients that could be causing problems in your skin. Natural doesn’t always mean better! Your skin doesn’t care whether something was produced in a lab or came out of the earth, if it’s irritating, your skin will make sure you know. Here’s a rundown of just some of the things that could be doing harm to your complexion.

BEEF TALLOW

Beef tallow is having a big viral moment online as people praise its moisturising qualities and its similarities to the sebum that our skin naturally produces. While this could work for some people there’s some pretty big issues others could find. The biggest issue is that it's highly comedogenic meaning it’s prone to clogging pores and causing breakouts on the skin, if you have congested or acne prone skin, this is definitely one to miss!

LEMON JUICE

Lemon juice often gets recommended as a natural alternative in skincare to brighten and exfoliate your skin. Fresh lemon juice is highly acidic and is one of the worst things you can put directly on to the delicate skin on your face. The acidity could lead to irritation, inflammation and long-term damage to your skin barrier, things you definitely want to be avoiding! Lemon juice contains compounds called psoralens that make your skin photosensitive, meaning you're more likely to burn and develop dark spots when exposed to sunlight.

COCONUT OIL

With a rise in popularity in cleansing balms and oils, coconut oil may seem like an easy alternative to remove your make up and leave skin feeling smooth. The reality? It's one of the most comedogenic oils out there, with a rating of 4 out of 5 on the comedogenic scale. This means it’s highly likely to cause breakouts and congestion within your skin. You may also find if you use the oil too close to the thin skin around your eyes, the clogged pores turn into milia, small white bumps that can develop under the surface of your skin.

GROUND NUTS

Whilst it may sound like the most natural and effective way to exfoliate your skin, ground nuts and seeds are often too harsh and cause damage to your skin. The surface of the particles tend to be jagged and asymmetrical meaning they may cause micro tears in your skin, leading to inflammation and irritation. Your skin barrier becomes compromised, making you more susceptible to sensitivity and environmental damage. Just because it's natural doesn't mean it's gentle!
